“Mindfulness, also called wise attention, helps us see what we are adding to our life experiences.” – Sharon Salzberg
Do you practice mindfulness?
If you’re a parent of a preteen or teen girl, mindfulness can be a powerful tool!
Mindfulness helps you slow down, become aware of your thoughts and emotions, and respond with intention rather than reactivity. It’s the difference between yelling in frustration and pausing to breathe and think. It’s choosing empathy over judgment. And it’s one of the best things you can model and teach your daughter.
There are many benefits of mindfulness—for you and your preteen or teen daughter. These include:
- 🌿 Relieving stress by calming the nervous system
- 😴 Improving sleep through relaxation and emotional regulation
- 🧠 Sharpening focus to support learning and performance
- 🧩 Supporting memory by enhancing presence and awareness
Simple Ways to Begin a Mindful Practice Together:
✨ Mindful Breathing
Use your breath as an anchor. When life feels overwhelming, bring your attention to the inhale and exhale. This small act of presence can shift your mindset in seconds.
👂 Listen Deeply
Practice listening without interrupting or fixing. Let each other finish thoughts and express feelings without rushing. This builds connection and trust.
🔍 Cultivate Insight
Encourage yourself and your daughter to observe situations as they are, rather than jumping to conclusions or dramatizing events. Ask: What can I learn from this?
💖 Practice Compassion
Bring kindness into your everyday interactions. Consider what someone else might be going through. Recognize that everyone—your daughter included—is doing the best they can.
🛑 Limit Reactivity
When emotions rise, take a moment. Pause. Breathe. Ask: What outcome do I want from this? This tiny pause often changes everything.
In my Mother Daughter Yoga class, Inspiring Healthy Choices, you and your daughter will explore the power of mindfulness together. Through movement, thoughtful conversation, and art, we’ll practice being present, making thoughtful decisions, and supporting each other in more intentional, compassionate ways.
