Healthy Mindset: Helping Girls Think Their Way to Confidence and Resilience

by | May 29, 2025

“Watch your thoughts: They become your words.
Watch your words: They become your actions.
Watch your actions: They become your habits.
Watch your habits: They become your character.
Watch your character: It becomes your destiny.”
— Buddha

Everything begins with our thoughts. What we say to ourselves—day in and day out—shapes the way we experience the world.  That’s why a healthy mindset is key.

Most preteen girls are not aware of the power of their thoughts and can easily find themselves caught in a cycle of negative self-talk.

I’m not good enough.

Everyone is judging me.

I’ll never figure it out.

I’m the dumbest in class.

This kind of thinking impacts their friendships, school performance, and attitude at home.

That’s why it’s critical to teach your daughter how to shift negative self-talk to an empowering inner dialogue.  When she discovers her inner-critic and recognizes that almost all of her negative thoughts are untrue, she can start to cultivate more balanced, compassionate thoughts. These “mind-shifts” can transform how she feels and acts, and ultimately, who she’ll become.

Here are a few simple mind shifts you can explore with your daughter today:

  • Instead of “This is horrible,” try “This is helping me grow.”
  • Instead of “This hurts,” try “I’m getting stronger.”
  • Instead of “I want to give up,” try “I’m improving, little by little.”
  • Instead of “This is really annoying,” try “I don’t like this situation, and I can take action to change it.”

One of my favorite Mother Daughter Yoga classes, Inspiring Healthy Choices, takes it a step further.  Through movement, discussion, and art you and your daughter will learn the power of a healthy mindset and how to create an empowering self-belief.  As your daughter builds awareness of her inner voice and learns how to reframe challenges and negative thinking, she will feel more confident, calm, and resilient. And when you do this work together, it deepens your bond and models emotional wellness for a lifetime.
